The Construction industry has long been associated with significant environmental impacts.

For example, construction projects often contribute to resource depletion, habitat destruction and pollution. In addition, fossil fuels are required to power equipment and machinery.

Historically,  industry productivity and profitability have been placed ahead of sustainability.

Reduce waste during demolition & Construction

Consider whether demolition is needed at all. Could buildings be re-purposed or re-used instead?

If demolition is required, materials should be re-used or recycled whenever possible. Consider whether materials like steel and concrete could be reused rather than thrown away. Carpets, flooring insulation materials and furniture should also be repurposed where possible.

During construction, the use of prefabricated materials produced in a factory can reduce waste generation on construction sites.

Plan implementation of Eco-friendly practices.

For insulation, consider using sustainable materials such as pre-cast concrete and reclaimed wood, metal, cork and bamboo.

The less distance materials have to travel the less energy is used transporting them.

Prioritise long-term sustainability

Sustainability is not just about the amount of emissions a building emits during construction but what it will emit in operation as well. Therefore, buildings should be designed to minimise energy consumption and utilise renewable energy sources. For example, the installation of solar energy during construction can reduce a building’s dependency on the electricity grid.

Develop a carbon budget

Some construction projects are now adopting a carbon budget.

A carbon budget:
· Sets out the amount of emissions that a project can generate during its entire life cycle
· Is used to guide material and design choices.
Once a project’s carbon budget has been exhausted, the project should aim to maintain zero emissions.

The role of innovation

Over time, innovative practices will continue to make construction more sustainable.

Researchers are currently working on ways of reducing the depletion of natural resources such as clay, sand and gravel by replacing them with alternative products.

For example, a green brick made from lime kiln dust and waste materials is currently in development.
Further investment in the development of sustainable construction materials, with a focus on affordability and accessibility, is required.

Challenges

More regulatory frameworks are required to encourage adherence to initiatives such as carbon budgets.

Many construction companies may not be willing to bear the increased costs associated with incorporating sustainable building practices. While these can lead to lower operating costs, it is property owners, not construction companies, that obtain this benefit. Therefore, construction companies may not be willing to make the initial investment required.

Providing greater financial incentives such as tax breaks, loan guarantees and grants is crucial to encourage the adoption of sustainable practices in the construction industry.

Additionally, many working in construction are also not aware of the impact their material choices have on the environment. Therefore, further education on sustainable building practices is required.

The construction industry plays a vital role in Australia’s economic prosperity. However, the industry’s financial sustainability must be carefully balanced with its economic sustainability.
