The Victorian government has announced that the Metro Tunnel will carry its first passengers from November 30. The project was first proposed by Premier John Brumby in 2008. It is now coming to fruition after more than a decade of planning and construction.
Seen as one of the most significant changes to Melbourne’s rail system in decades, the Metro Tunnel is expected to reshape how people move in and out of the CBD. The new route offers an alternative to the ageing City Loop. It is designed to reduce travel times for thousands of commuters each day. So what impact will this project have on Melbourne — and what can commuters expect?
What can commuters expect?
According to Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan, the state has never seen a rail project of this scale.
“It’s the most complex rail project ever undertaken in our state’s history … it’s two nine-kilometre tunnels, five underground stations all being built beneath Australia’s biggest city,” she said.
Services will begin with a limited timetable. However, the tunnel is expected to be fully integrated into the wider transport network from February. The $13.5 billion project aims to ease congestion by providing a long-awaited alternative to the City Loop. This is a network that has reached full capacity in recent years as Melbourne’s population has grown.
Public Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams explained that the City Loop is at capacity. Removing the Pakenham and Sunbury lines will free up space and allow more services on other lines.
“The City Loop is full, which means that without the Metro Tunnel, and with a growing and changing population, we would have been going backwards,” Williams said.
She noted that the benefits will extend far beyond daily travel.
“The Metro Tunnel was always about being able to add more services to our network, not just for today but for many generations to come. The City Loop has served our community very, very well for over 40 years, but now she has a city to help her carry the load, and together they will keep Victoria moving.”
Trains will begin running through the tunnel from Westall and West Footscray every 20 minutes between 10am and 3pm on weekdays. On weekends, services will run every 20 minutes from 10am to 7pm.
Services will extend to East Pakenham every 40 minutes and to Sunbury every 60 minutes. More frequent services are expected once the full timetable is released in February.
The opening of the Metro Tunnel comes during a significant period of infrastructure investment in Victoria. Projects such as the West Gate Tunnel and the Suburban Rail Loop are reshaping the city at a rapid pace.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged additional funding to the Suburban Rail Loop. The funding comes on top of the $9 billion previously committed by the state and federal governments.
