The Marinus Link Interconnector cable is now fully funded for construction following a landmark $3.8 billion announcement from the Clean Energy Finance Fund earlier this month. This investment is the single largest made by any government-backed renewables financier. It marks a turning point in Australia’s clean energy future.

Stage 1 of the project will deliver a 350km undersea and underground electricity and data connector, linking North-West Tasmania with the Latrobe Valley in Victoria. Once complete, the interconnector will provide a vital new pathway for renewable power, strengthen the national electricity grid, and create thousands of jobs across both states.

Assisting in the transition to renewable energy

The project has been described as a critical plank of Australia’s transition to renewable energy. It will assist with the exchange of Tasmania’s hydro and wind-generated power and excess solar and wind generated from renewable energy assets in Victoria and NSW. The power transmitted across the cable will be enough to power 750,000 new homes.

Lower power bills

It’s expected the project will result in lower power bills on both sides of Bass Strait. The project’s proponents estimate that the construction of Marinus Link Stage 1 will enable future wholesale electricity prices to fall by an estimated $15 per MWh for Tasmania and $17 per MWh in Victoria. That would translate to a cut of up to $165 on average every year for Tasmanians and up to $78 on average every year for Victorians, with a total net benefit exceeding $12bn.

Increased economic activity and job creation

The development is also expected to generate $2.4 billion in additional investment and create around 2,400 new jobs. These roles will cover a wide range of areas. These include skilled trades like electricians, plant operators, and civil construction workers. Also in demand are higher-level positions in engineering, environmental management, and project leadership. Beyond direct employment, the project will stimulate demand across supply chains, local businesses, and support industries. What has been the reaction?

Michael Bailey, is the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive.  He believes the project will help future-proof the state’s electricity supply.

“Tasmania’s energy generation isn’t keeping up with demand,” Mr Bailey told the ABC.

“Marinus Link will underpin new generation projects and help grow the economy and support businesses around the state that need more energy.”

The project will be jointly operated by the Federal Government, Tasmanian Government and Victorian Government. Construction of the project is expected to begin in 2026. The first stage is due for completion by 2030.
